Men’s Health Month

June is Men’s Health Month. The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems & encourage early detection & treatment of disease among men & boys. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, & individuals an opportunity to encourage males to seek regular medical advice & early treatment for disease & injury. (MensHealthMonth.org, 2020)

Did you know that on average, men die five years younger than women? Also, men die at higher rates from nine of the top 10 causes of death.(ODPHP, 2018) Furthermore, when it comes to insurance, men are also less likely to be insured compared to women.(ODPHP, 2018) Collectively, these factors impact men in many which can translate into them being fathers, supportive partners, & engaged community members.(ODPHP, 2018)

The good news is most of the factors that contribute to men’s shorter, less healthy lives are preventable! Prevention begins with regular visits to a primary care health provider. This allows your doctor to establish baselines for important keys to overall wellness such as: blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, & PSA (a screening test for prostate cancer risk). Your doctor can then monitor your levels over time, allowing any changes to be easily noticed which can mean catching any potentially dangerous conditions early. A helpful chart of recommended screenings can be found by visiting www.healthfinder.gov.

In addition to visiting your physician regularly, it is also vital to get active & stay active! The benefits of physical activity on health outcomes are extensive. If the gym isn’t your thing, try joining a recreational team, swimming, or playing sports with your friends or family.

This month is the perfect time to get started on a positive change & we can all join the cause by encouraging the men in our lives. Take the time this month to remind fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, & friends that you & other family members love him & need him to be alive & healthy for as long as possible.
